Seniors & Stairs
Stairs can be a safety hazard for people of all ages, but especially seniors. If you or someone you know travels up and down stairs every day, be sure to take precaution; hold onto handrails, install rubber treads or anti-slip tape. Stairs should be brightly illuminated and the top and bottom of the stairs should be free from objects.
We’ve found a few gadgets for seniors who need some additional assistance going up and down their stairs:
- Stair lift: These are electric lifts installed on the wall and carry someone up and down the stairs. These can be purchased new, reconditioned, or rented.
- Stair climbing wheelchair: This special wheelchair is designed to climb up and down stairs.
- EZ step: This device looks like a cane, but has a plastic base on the bottom that add a step between stairs.
- Stairsteady: This is a handrail with a supporting rail attached to it. When going up and down the stairs, the person operating the stairsteady holds onto the rail while moving at their own pace.
